Developments in the farming industry lead to business expansion into sales of agricultural machinery, supply of parts and servicing. Whilst the agricultural machinery dealership moved to separate premises on the outskirts of Ely, the blacksmiths and ironmongers remained in the centre growing to incorporate a hardware and DIY store. In 1998, the city centre shop in Market Street was closed and moved to Lisle Lane alongside the Ely agricultural machinery depot.
